The versatility of flax

Stauper

'The design of the Stauper Daybed is inspired by the experience of sunbathing on the Stauper rocks in the Norwegian Tønsberg fjord during the summers. Experience the combination of lying on a hardened yet extremely comfortable surface, that reminds of the Tønsberg landscape shaped by movements of massive glaciers, dynamic weather and sea movements over million of years.

The chosen materials and constructional properties of the Stauper Daybed provide the flexibility that is needed to ensure a responsiveness to the users movements and positioning. Experience the calmness, qualities of meditation and a sense of fluidity through the rocking feature this daybed offers. The asymmetric characteristics of the daybed allows you to have four options for the neck support.

Hopefully, this agile daybed serves as a vessel for spreading the word of flaxs' versatility; and thereby nudging the public to be a part of a CO2 positive process. Flax requires a minimum to grow and is farmed all around the world; making it excellent to utilize as a substitute for less sustainable materials, such as plastics and traditional composites.

The top surface of the daybed is made from 230gsm long stapled flax fibres and bioresin. Legs have been produced from cold rolled recycled steel coated with natural Aglaia paint. The two main elements are connected using pads made of old rubber tires, while the pillow is sown from leather leftovers after furniture repairs.

With the Stauper Daybed we hope to endorse the use of Flax for it’s material properties as well as the C02-positive and versatile aspects. The Flax is currently being utilized in many productions: from oils (food & furnishing), seeds (baking, nutrition), and stems (linen, thread biocomposites, insulation), just to mention few.

We believe in using a good design as ambassador for sustainability in production. Experience the texture, warmth, flexibility, strength & movement as some of the main features the Stauper Daybed provides.'

Stauper is part of the StudentDesign exhibition during the MilanDesignWeek at Stecca 3.0 from 9-14 April 2019.
